Jeremy Mank joined me on the show to talk about the importance of Sleep Apnea, a condition that can impact your ability to achieve restorative sleep.
There are, actually, a lot of medical conditions that can directly effect sleep, but Sleep Apnea is by far the most common. Jeremy Mank owns and operates an online store called CPAP Supply.ca. Breathing is what keeps us alive and this includes when we’re sleeping. Sleep apnea is a potentially serious problem because it interrupts breathing while you sleep. Basically, your breathing stops and starts throughout the night without you being aware of it.
Of the three types of sleep apnea, obstructive apnea is the most common form that happens when muscles in the back of the throat relax. As a result, the airway narrows and at times closes. This is what causes snoring and choking sounds. There are several causes of obstructive sleep apnea, but it is commonly attributed to being overweight and/or having a thick neck circumference.
CPAPs is the device of choice for this condition because it provides continuous positive air pressure to keep the airway open.
Central sleep apnea is more complicated and has little to do with physical factors. It occurs because the brain is not sending necessary signals to the muscles that control breathing. As a result, the diaphragm muscles atrophy and this weakens the ability to breathe. This can be caused by neuromuscular diseases, as in my situation.
The third form, known as complex sleep apnea is when someone has a combination of the two noted above.
Both central and complex sleep apnea is treated by the use of a BiPAP. A BiPAP has two pressure settings, one for inhalation and one for exhalation. Basically, it forces those sleepy diaphragm muscles to do their job.
Complications can occur when sleep apnea is not addressed. Daytime fatigue, for example, is very common and can be dangerous when driving. Feeling chronically tired can also contribute to mood disorders and depression.
Other physical problems are also a big concern. High blood pressure, heart problems, type 2 diabetes and even liver problems can be associated with sleep apnea.
Pay attention to symptoms, and talk to your doctor, if you have issues getting to sleep and or staying asleep.
